Beloved Performer Dame Patricia Routledge, Famous for Hyacinth Bucket, Passes Away at 96 Years Old

Performer Patricia Routledge, famous for portraying Hyacinth Bucket in the popular television comedy the series Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the age of 96, her agent announced.

Additionally, she appeared in monologues by Alan Bennett and portrayed the BBC's crime-solving retiree Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who left this world peacefully in her sleep this morning with loved ones near."

"Despite her advanced years, her dedication to acting and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as younger viewers keep discovering her work through her popular television roles."

The announcement added: "Her absence will be deeply felt by her family and friends and by her loyal fans around the world."

A Life in the Spotlight

Patricia Routledge was best known as Hyacinth Bucket - who insisted it be said "bouquet" - a comic creation who embodied the height of affectation and class consciousness.

"She is a wonderfully awful character and I had great fun with the role enormously," the star said.

Keeping Up Appearances aired from 1990 until 1995, and the following year she was voted the UK's favorite actress at the BBC's 60th anniversary awards.

Additionally, she earned praise on stage as well as screen after starting her career in the theater in the mid-20th century.

With performances in London theater, she built a reputation in the United States when she was awarded the Tony for outstanding actress in a musical on New York theater for Darling of the Day in 1968.

She proved equally skilled at serious drama as she was at song-and-dance and humor - she appeared in Shakespeare's histories at the RSC, then received an Laurence Olivier Award for leading musical actress for the production Candide in the eighties.

The 1980s also witnessed her emergence as a true national TV star - receiving parts by Victoria Wood in As Seen on TV, and Alan Bennett in three of his renowned Talking Heads monologues, including her Bafta-nominated role, for which she received a British Academy nomination.

She earned two further Bafta nominations, for Keeping Up Appearances, in 1992 and 93, then headlined the main character as a senior citizen on a journey into detective work in the series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates between the late 1990s.

She was honored with an Order of the British Empire in 1993, a CBE in 2004, and damehood in 2017.

Through her memorable characters, Dame Patricia Routledge brought laughter and joy to audiences worldwide, establishing a rich body of work that is still enjoyed by admirers for generations to come.
