WHO Faces Significant Staff Reduction Following United States Funding Withdrawal
The international public health agency disclosed intentions to reduce its workforce by nearly a quarter – totaling more than 2,000 positions – before mid-2026.
Financial Crisis Triggers Major Restructuring
The decision follows following the US, formerly the organization's biggest donor, pulled out funding earlier this year.
Washington had been responsible for approximately eighteen percent of the organization's total budget, causing a significant financial gap.
Expected Staff Cuts
According to organizational estimates, the workforce will decrease from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by mid-2026.
The reduction of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts comprises job cuts, employees retiring, and regular attrition.
"This year has been among the most difficult in our existence, while we undertook a painful but necessary process of prioritization and restructuring," stated the organization's leader.
Budget Gap Persists
This Switzerland-headquartered organization currently confronts a funding gap of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 period, representing nearly a fourth of its total budget.
The amount represents an improvement from a previous projected shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars reported in spring.
Not Included Funding
These budget projections exclude a further 1.1 billion dollars in expected contributions from ongoing discussions with multiple donors.
A representative for the organization noted that the present unfunded portion of the budget is actually smaller than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple reasons:
- Reduced overall budget size
- Initiation of a new donor outreach effort
- Higher in member states' mandatory contributions
This restructuring initiative is now approaching its completion, paving the way for the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
